Walking the Camino with your dog
Yes, you can walk the Camino with your dog. People do it every year. But it changes almost everything about how you plan — and it's worth knowing that before you go.
The trail itself is fine. Dogs handle the distances well if they're fit, the terrain is manageable for most breeds, and Spaniards are generally relaxed about dogs in public spaces. Your dog will get an enormous amount of attention from other pilgrims, which either delights or exhausts depending on the dog.
The albergue situation is the real challenge. Municipal albergues — the cheapest, most communal ones — do not accept dogs. This is the rule, not the exception. You'll need to plan your accommodation around private albergues, rural guesthouses (casas rurales), or small hotels, most of which do accept well-behaved dogs. This means booking ahead more carefully, paying a bit more, and occasionally walking further than planned to reach a dog-friendly place.
A few practical details that matter: bring your dog's vaccination record and EU pet passport if travelling internationally — you may be asked for it at the border or by accommodation. Pack a collapsible water bowl and carry enough water for both of you between stops; dogs overheat faster than humans on long exposed stages. Check paws daily — the trail surfaces vary enormously, and paw pads take a beating over weeks of walking.
Hot summer months are genuinely hard on dogs. If you're walking July or August, early starts and long midday breaks in shade are not optional — they're necessary. Spring and autumn are much kinder on a four-legged pilgrim.
The reward: you will never walk alone, and your dog will have the best month of its life.
