When something goes wrong on your Camino
Something will go wrong on your Camino. A knee, a tendon, a blister that gets infected, a stomach that gives out for two days. The question isn't whether — it's what you do when it happens.
The most common mistake is ignoring it. Pilgrims push through pain they shouldn't push through because stopping feels like failure, because other people are walking, because they've come this far. This is how a manageable problem becomes a reason to abandon the trail entirely. Pain that speaks up on day five becomes an injury that screams by day ten if you don't listen early.
The first response to any new pain should be a rest day — not a shorter day, a full rest day. Stay where you are. Elevate what hurts. Get to a pharmacy; Spanish farmacists are knowledgeable and accustomed to pilgrim problems. Anti-inflammatories, KT tape, and good advice are available in almost every town on the Francés.
Knee pain specifically: shorten your stride on descents, use poles to redistribute load, consider skipping the most aggressive downhill stages by taking a bus or taxi to the next town. This is not cheating. The Camino has no purity rules. Many experienced pilgrims take a bus over a single brutal stage to protect a joint that would otherwise end their walk. You can stamp your credencial at the destination and continue on foot from there.
If pain persists beyond two rest days, see a doctor. Spain has public health centres (centros de salud) in most towns along the route — walk-in, free for EU citizens, and experienced with Camino injuries.
Stopping is not quitting. Resting is not weakness. The pilgrims who finish are usually not the fittest — they're the most patient.
