Burgos deserves more than one night

Most pilgrims spend one night in Burgos and leave before they've seen it. This is a mistake worth correcting.

Burgos sits at roughly a quarter of the way along the Camino Francés — day ten or eleven for most walkers — and it arrives at exactly the moment when the body is tired and the mind is starting to wonder what it got itself into. The instinct is to rest your feet, eat, sleep, and move on. Understandable. But Burgos rewards the pilgrim who stays an extra day.

The cathedral is the reason. The Catedral de Santa María de Burgos is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the finest Gothic buildings in Spain — the kind of place that stops you mid-step the first time you see its spires rising above the old city rooftops. Inside, the scale and detail are quietly overwhelming: chapels within chapels, elaborate tombs, stonework that took three centuries to complete. It costs a few euros to enter. It is worth every one of them.

Beyond the cathedral, the old city is genuinely beautiful. The Arco de Santa María — a fortified medieval gate on the river — leads into a compact historic centre with good food, shaded squares, and the particular pleasure of wandering without a pack. Burgos has one of the best tapas cultures in Castile; the streets around the Plaza Mayor fill up in the evening with locals and pilgrims who've made the same decision to stay.

A rest day in Burgos isn't time lost. It's the kind of pause that reminds you why you came to Spain in the first place.
