When is the best time to walk the Camino?
When is the best time to walk? It depends who you are.
Ask ten pilgrims when to walk the Camino and you'll get ten different answers. All of them are right.
May and June are the sweet spot for most people — warm but not yet scorching, the path alive with wildflowers, enough pilgrims to feel the community without the summer crush. July and August bring heat on the Meseta that can be brutal, and albergues fill fast. But those same months have an energy that's hard to find any other time of year.
September is the secret favourite of experienced pilgrims. The summer crowds thin out. The light turns golden. The evenings cool down. Grape harvest begins in the wine regions along the route.
October and November? Quieter still. Galicia turns green and misty. Some albergues close. The path feels almost ancient — just you and the stones and the rain. For a certain kind of pilgrim, that's exactly the point.
And winter? A small, dedicated community walks year-round. They'll tell you the Camino in January is a completely different experience — and they mean that as a compliment.
