Do you need to book the Camino in advance?

Do you need to book the Camino in advance? The honest answer depends on when you're going — and it matters more than most guides tell you.

In July and August on the Camino Francés, the answer is yes. Albergues in popular towns — Pamplona, Logroño, Burgos, León, Sarria, O Pedrouzo — fill up by early afternoon. If you're arriving at 5pm hoping to find a bunk, you will sometimes be walking another 5km to the next village in the dark. This isn't a horror story. It's just July.

From Sarria onwards it gets more intense. Sarria is the last point from which you can walk the minimum 100km to earn the Compostela, so it attracts a huge wave of pilgrims who join just for the final stretch. In summer, the last 100km of the Francés can feel genuinely crowded. Book those stages.

Spring (April–June) and September are different. You'll find beds more easily, but popular albergues still fill. A loose plan — knowing where you broadly want to stop each night, with a few key spots pre-booked — gives you flexibility without the anxiety of arriving somewhere with nothing.

October onwards: crowd pressure drops significantly. Many albergues close after the season. You'll have more freedom but fewer options, so knowing which are open matters more than booking early.

The Camino's spirit is spontaneous. But running out of beds isn't spiritual — it's just exhausting. Book the pinch points, leave the rest loose.
