A little stamp. A whole day of walking. Earned.

The credencial is just a folded piece of cardstock. By the end of the Camino, it's one of the most meaningful things you own.

Every stamp tells a story. The church in Pamplona where the hospitalero pressed so hard the ink bled through two pages. The tiny café in the middle of nowhere that had the most elaborate rubber stamp you'd ever seen. The albergue stamp you almost missed because you arrived after closing and a kind stranger let you in anyway.

Pilgrims become quietly obsessive about their credencial. You check it in the evening, running a finger over each day's stamps. It's a physical record of every kilometre — proof that you were actually there, actually walking, actually doing the thing.

In Santiago, the Pilgrim Office checks your stamps to issue the Compostela certificate. But by that point, the certificate almost feels secondary. The credencial already holds everything.

Most pilgrims frame it when they get home. It never quite looks like enough to explain what it represents.
