A stone at the Cruz de Ferro

A stone. A cross. Something left behind forever.

On a windswept pass in the mountains of León, there's an iron cross on a tall wooden pole, surrounded by an enormous mound of stones. Pilgrims have been leaving rocks here for centuries.

The tradition is simple: carry a stone from home — or pick one up along the way — and leave it at the Cruz de Ferro. With it, you leave something heavier. A grief. A regret. A fear. Something you've been carrying that was never meant to go all the way to Santiago.

Many pilgrims spend weeks on the Camino barely thinking about why they came. Then they reach Cruz de Ferro, climb the mound, and suddenly it's all right there. Whatever brought them to this path in the first place — the loss, the question, the restlessness — meets them at the top.

Some leave photos. Some leave letters. Some just stand there for a long time looking at the cross and the stones and the horizon.

You don't need to be religious for it to mean something. The weight of everyone who came before you is built into that pile. It's one of the most quietly powerful places on the walk.
