The Camino asks one question. Every single day.
Not "how far did you walk?" Not "how are your feet?" The question the Camino actually asks — the one that shows up somewhere around day four and doesn't leave — is simpler and harder than either of those.
Why are you here?
Most pilgrims have an official answer ready. Fitness. Adventure. Bucket list. A break from work. These answers are true enough. They got you to St. Jean. But the Camino has a way of peeling them back, one long day at a time, until something more honest surfaces underneath.
Some people discover they're running away from something. Others find they've been looking for permission to change something they already knew needed changing. Some arrive with grief and find the walking helps carry it. Others come for no reason they can name and find that walking 800 kilometres was the reason.
The Camino doesn't judge any of these answers. It just keeps asking.
The pilgrims who get the most from the walk are usually the ones who stopped defending their official answer and got curious about the real one.
