Stop walking. Just for an hour. Look around.

The Camino passes through hundreds of villages. Most pilgrims pass through them too — eyes on the path, mind on the next stage, boots barely slowing down.

That's understandable. There are kilometres to cover. Albergues fill up. The rhythm of the walk is hard to break once it takes hold. But some of the best moments on the Camino happen precisely when pilgrims ignore the rhythm and just stop.

An old man playing cards outside a bar who turns out to have watched pilgrims pass for sixty years. A Romanesque church that has been standing since the 12th century, unlocked, empty, quiet. A village square where nothing is happening and that's the whole point — just stone walls, a cat, afternoon light slanting across the cobblestones.

Spain's small pueblos along the Camino hold more history per square metre than most museums. They're just easy to miss when your goal is always the next town.

The Camino rewards slowness. The villages remind you why.
